Electron Microscopy Division

Description

The Electron Microscopy Division (DME) of the Central Services of Scientific and Technological Research (SC-ICYT) of the University of Cadiz is the unit in charge of providing services related to the structural and chemical characterization of inorganic and biological materials in the research area of the scientific and business community. Support activities for teaching and scientific dissemination are included in this service.

Lines of research

The lines of research in which the DME participates include characterization at scales ranging from micron to nanometer or angstrom, from:

  • Heterogeneous catalysts.
  • Graphene compounds.
  • Structures for efficient photovoltaic devices.
  • III-N Heterostructures.
  • High quality In(GA)N structures for applications in opto and microelectronic devices.
  • Synthetic diamond.
  • Reinforced polymers.
  • Materials for heritage monument conservation.
  • Characterization of marine organisms.

Infrastructures

Transmission/Scanning-transmission Electron Microscopes:
• JEOL2100 LaB6
• JEOL2010F
• FEI Titan3 Themis 60-300

Scanning Microscopes:
• FEI Quanta 200
• FEI Nova NanoSem 450
The DME instrumentation is complemented by one laboratory for the preparation of material samples and another for biological samples, equipped with all the necessary instruments for the preparation of electron-transparent samples for transmission or scanning microscopy. There is also a wide range of special sample-holders for non-conventional experiments (anaerobic transfer, heating, cryogenic temperature cooling, electronic tomography).
